Evy Newton was born and raised in Illinois, moving to San Diego, California, at the age of sixteen. She graduated with honors from San Diego State University, earning a B.A. in English, and twenty years later returned to obtain her California Teaching Credential. “I knew at the age of 10 that I wanted to be an English teacher when I grew up, and that finally became a reality at the age of 42!” As a junior high English teacher, she learned very quickly that students would immediately and willingly read anything on her classroom whiteboard if it was accompanied by art. Cartoon characters…landscapes…abstracts… her doodles and drawings engaged her students and propelled her teaching. And so it began….
Evy and her husband, a political science professor, retired together in 2008. Missing an outlet for drawing, she began experimenting with acrylics. “Colors and textures have always fascinated me; powerful abstract art can evoke such deep, personal emotions. One must search the art—considering separate sections and colors, as well as the entire piece—blending one’s own history into perceptions of and responses to the piece. A very personal reaction and bond with the image may occur… a bond that may continue to evolve with the passage of time.”
All paintings were created using professinal grade acrylics, and canvas that has been stretched and mounted on 1 1/2”-2” deep wooden frames. They do not require additional framing. Each has been coated to prevent fading. Each is also highly textured.
